The Third Wave of Recovery Nutrition Builds

Nu Science Labs Inc. Announces Issuance of U.S. Patent for Use of Prebiotics and Nucleotides to Enhance the Gut Microbiome

CHESTNUT HILL, MA—Nu Science Labs Inc., an innovative sports nutrition company and the developer of the nuBound nucleotide sports recovery supplement, announced that the United States Patent and Trademark Office has issued U.S. Patent 10,271,570 covering the combination of prebiotics and nucleotides in a nutritional supplement to enhance the microbiome and improve immune function.

“Issuance of this patent extends the leadership of Nu Science Labs Inc. in the field of nucleotide supplementation by adding prebiotics, which provide a synergistic benefit that helps to enhance the gut microbiome,” said Mark Connell, Founder and CEO, Nu Science Labs Inc. “This leads to better immune performance, which translates into better recovery for athletes.”

Nu Science Labs Inc. pioneered the combined use of prebiotics and nucleotides by formulating their nuBound nucleotide sports recovery supplement to include a therapeutic dose of prebiotics. The combination of these ingredients provides support for improvement of the gut microbiome, which consists of an estimated 40 trillion bacterial cells (compared to the estimated 30 trillion cells comprising the average human body). The composition of these different microbial communities changes in response to food sources available and these modifications exert a profound influence on human health and a direct influence on the immune system.

Prebiotics are non-digestible (by humans) food ingredients that can be broken down by bacteria in the gut. They are distinct from probiotics, which are live cultures of organisms. The combination of prebiotics and nucleotides provides unique support for a healthy gut microbiome.

Athletes benefit from an enhanced microbiome, and the strengthening of their immune system, because it counteracts the immunosuppressive effect of strenuous exercise.

In addition to this newly issued patent, Nu Science Labs Inc. holds U.S. Patent 10,016,472 (mitigating the negative effects of resistance exercise using nucleotides) and has multiple additional patents filed on this and related technologies.

The Third Wave of Recovery Nutrition Begins Today

Nu Science Labs Inc. Announces Issuance of US Patent for Use of a Nucleotide Sports Recovery Supplement

CHESTNUT HILL, MA—Nu Science Labs Inc., an innovative sports nutrition company and the developer of the nuBound nucleotide sports recovery supplement, announced that the United States Patent and Trademark Office has issued US Patent 10,016,472 covering the use of nucleotides in a nutritional supplement to enhance recovery and the performance of athletes.

This patent makes claims in connection with the demonstrated benefits of nucleotides to mitigate the negative effects arising from resistance exercise. “Issuance of this patent confirms the leadership of Nu Science Labs in understanding the effects of dietary nucleotides and applying these insights to formulations that help athletes perform better,” said Mark Connell, Founder and CEO, Nu Science Labs Inc.

Athletes seek to enhance their performance capabilities by adapting to the stress of training.  While necessary to initiate adaptation, this stress can become counterproductive. The stress response is modulated hormonally by the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis (HPA axis) and its feedback loops.

The physiological stress of heavy exercise elicits cortisol production which mobilizes energy but can also lead to catabolic effects and muscle breakdown.  Similarly, inflammation can enhance the synthesis of protein and muscle repair, however, excessive inflammation can cause tissue damage.  The proper balance between the positive and negative effects of stress is crucial to optimizing a training program.

In a clinical trial using nucleotides, conducted by William Kraemer, PhD of the Ohio State University, nuBound users had 32 percent lower levels of cortisol and 27 less inflammation in the first hour after heavy resistance exercise.  Measured at 24 hours, the nuBound group had 18 percent less tissue damage.

Dr. Kraemer noted that, “nucleotide supplementation seems to reduce resistance exercise induced muscle damage, resulting in a greater preservation of force production capability”. Immediately after exercising, the nuBound users had a 41 percent higher force production capability compared to the placebo group, who took three days to catch up in their recovery.

In addition to this newly issued patent, Nu Science Labs has multiple additional patents filed on this and related technologies.
